Your personal relationship with downtown

The Valdosta Daily Times

VALDOSTA — If you haven’t visited Downtown Valdosta in a while, this is a good weekend to return. This evening, First Friday continues featuring the best of area musical entertainment, downtown’s best foods, and a great place to socialize with friends. First Fridays have become a monthly tradition for many visitors, and downtown prepares its best for its First Friday regulars, newcomers, and especially those who haven’t made a First Friday in some time.

At 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday, as well as additional dates come the next two weekends, Theatre Guild Valdosta presents its 2013-14 season opener with “9 to 5: The Musical.” Based on the 1980 Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin hit movie, Theatre Guild presents this musical adaptation for the stage. Should be plenty of singing, dancing and fun — all in Downtown Valdosta’s The Dosta Playhouse.

Come Saturday, throughout the day, the 100 Black Men of Valdosta presents the annual barbecue contest featuring backyard and professional chefs presenting their ribs, chicken and other dishes for judging as well as public consumption. Visitors can enjoy a heaping plate of food while listening to music and visiting with friends.

Downtown is a fantastic place, set among historical architecture, with plenty of food, shops and entertainment.

But for it to continue, to ensure it remains that fantastic place, we must visit and participate in its success.

This weekend is a great time to continue, start or revive your personal relationship with downtown.
