Busy? A good problem to have

-- — For people who say there's nothing to do in Valdosta, they are either not paying attention or they are too hard to please.

There's high school basketball games and wrestling matches. Soon, there will be baseball games for all ages to watch, and in many cases to play, too.

There are rodeos and chess tournaments and opening art exhibits and coming Valdosta Symphony Orchestra concerts and more.

Take the performing arts, for example.

This past weekend, audiences could choose between Valdosta State University Opera's "Then & Now" and the partnered production of Valdosta School of Ballet and VSU Theatre & Dance's "Cinderella."

This week, VSU Theatre & Dance presents "Eventually Ever After," which is the annual children's show, and Theatre Guild Valdosta's comedy production of "The Dixie Swim Club."

So, there's plenty to do, plenty to see. One could even argue there's too much to see and do.

This past weekend, the "Cinderella" and opera performances not only played the same days, they played at the same time each day. This weekend, there are more time and date options as well as different target audiences, but both the VSU children's show and the Guild's adult show open the same week.

There have been efforts to better coordinate community schedules to ensure there aren't too many things on the same weekends while other weekends seem sparse.

The truth, however, there are few if any sparse weekends any more.

There seems to always be something happening, which when you get down to it is a good problem for a community to have.

THUMBS UP: To Carol Mikkelsen. Valdosta State University Opera’s “Dido and Aeneas” marks the last production before Mikkelsen’s retirement
after 44 years with Valdosta State and the creation of the opera program. She plans to continue
working with VSU part-time, but this weekend’s performance marks her last full-time participation with the opera productions. Ovations all around for her work.
