The Valdosta Daily Times
Looking for something a little different for your Thursday night? Why not get an early start to your weekend football fix?
The Valdosta State Blazers play 7:30 p.m. Thursday against UNC-Pembroke, Cleveland Field at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. This is also the last home game of the regular season for the Blazers.
Though it has fought hard and won national championships, the Blazers have long fought for hometown crowds to cheer its wins.
With Valdosta and Lowndes County’s long history of championship high school football and the region’s generational trifecta of Georgia, Florida and Florida State fans, the Blazers have had a tougher battle increasing their fan base. Especially against the long-time, generational pull of other college ball teams on Saturday afternoons and evenings.
Make no mistake. The Blazers have a dedicated fan base. VSU football fans are as committed to the university team’s success as fans of any team, anywhere.
It’s just that these committed fans could use a few more people to fill the bleachers. The team could use more people cheering its efforts.
Barring playoffs, this may be the last chance this season for VSU to build its hometown crowd. Perhaps stronger support from the community will supply just the push of inspiration needed to win and maybe move forward to another championship season.
