Community strength in weekend

VALDOSTA — Some weekends are meant for fun. Some weekends are meant to help others. And some weekends, you can do both.

There are a few events scheduled Saturday that will allow area folks to participate in fun events while lending a helping hand to people in need and organizations devoted to good works.

— Tree House Resale celebrates a year of benefiting Hospice of South Georgia and the Langdale Hospice House. It will host a celebration of meeting its first-year goals, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, at the 3005 N. Ashley St. location in Five Points.

— First Presbyterian Church hosts the Fifth Annual Break Bread Bun Run, a 5K race, starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, with 6:30 a.m. registration, starting at the YMCA on Gornto Road. This run benefits the Break Bread Together ministry, similar to Meals on Wheels, which has been delivering meals to people for more than 40 years.

— Quota International of Valdosta hosts a yard sale to benefit an area 5-year-old girl diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a neurological condition that affects girls almost exclusively. The yard sale will be held 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Brooker Insurance, 2406 A Bemiss Road.

Each event spreads a little human generosity. Each event has the power to positively influence lives. Each event offers each participant a small share of helping the community — something to share and something to gain.
