Valdosta, you ought to be in pictures

The Valdosta Daily Times

-- — Valdosta occasionally has something to do with a big-name Hollywood movie. Wild Adventures served as the location for the West Coast theme park in “Zombieland.” Though no filming took place in South Georgia, Valdosta is mentioned in “Fried Green Tomatoes” and “For Your Consideration.”

With the new movie “Grandma’s Blessings,” Valdosta served as both the shoot site and a location within the movie. For hometown movie makers Roy Kirkland and Doug Sebastian, “Grandma’s Blessings” is the latest in a series of movies that keeps the filming set in Valdosta.

Through the past few years, Doug Sebastian Productions has filmed the risqué comedy “And There You Are” and the award-winning documentary “A Cross Burning in Willacoochee.” Sebastian and Kirkland have also filmed two films still awaiting release: the vampire-werewolf adventure “Battle of the Cursed: The Two Kings” and the thriller “Crazed.

“Grandma’s Blessings” is the story of Drayton Taylor, a TV talk show host who loses his job following an embarrassing episode on live television. Unemployed and his possessions gone, Drayton learns his grandmother has left him something in her will. He flies to Texas to say good-bye and receive his inheritance, which is an old 1970s-era Champion RV. Driving home to Georgia, Drayton learns his grandmother’s secrets while having many adventures. If rated, Kirkland said the movie would likely receive a PG rating.

Tonight, Sebastian and Kirkland host a world premiere for “Grandma’s Blessings” in Valdosta. This event will celebrate a new movie but it should also be viewed as a celebration of Valdosta’s ability to be a new home for movie makers.
