February is Women’s Heart Health Month. Today, Feb. 1, is National Wear Red Day to raise awareness of women’s heart health.
The wearing of the red should serve as a reminder to women as well as their loved ones to fight heart disease through eating healthier foods in smaller portions, exercise and physical activity, and talking to their doctors about their risks for heart disease.
“Taking good care of your heart means controlling your risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, and being overweight,” according to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.
“Having just one risk factor increases your risk of developing heart disease, and your risk skyrockets with each added risk factor.”
The institute also reports that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. Wear Red Day underscores the serious nature of heart disease in women, but it also celebrates women doing all they can to protect their hearts. In this case, seeing red today may just save your life.
