GHP: We enjoyed your stay

The Valdosta Daily Times

VALDOSTA — If you haven’t noticed, for the past few weeks, hundreds of students from across the state have been in Valdosta for the 50th Annual Governor’s Honors Program. Rising high school juniors and seniors, these visitors are among the best and brightest that Georgia has to offer. They spend several weeks at Valdosta State University receiving instruction in a wide array of interests and fields.

For nearly 40 years, Valdosta State has hosted the GHP. The goal of this program is to motivate students to become life-long learners. The program strives to create an atmosphere where students realize the joy of being smart is not just making A’s, but actually learning for their own sake and reward.

The GHP is also a great opportunity for VSU. Many GHP students have returned to Valdosta State a year or two later as enrolled college students. Some GHP instructors, many of whom are also from across the state and elsewhere, have later become VSU instructors or professors.

The Governor’s Honors Program is also an opportunity for Valdosta. Though the students spend most of their time on campus, it is a chance for Valdosta to show what it has to offer to both the students and the parents who dropped them off a few weeks ago.

This weekend, as the GHP ends Saturday for another year, these parents will return to pick up their children.

With the proper show of hospitality, who knows who or how many of these students or families may be attracted to Valdosta. There is never anything wrong in attracting people who are considered the best and the brightest in their fields of interest.

Valdosta considers it an honor to host the Governor’s Honors Program. We hope you enjoyed your stay.
