Change of Command: A tradition of renewal

The Valdosta Daily Times

-- — Last week, Moody Air Force Base experienced a change of command for the 23rd Wing at Moody Air Force Base.

For longtime residents of Valdosta and Lowndes County, a change of command has an almost seasonal aspect. As one season changes to another so must the command of Moody’s various operations change. Ceremonies marking these changes of command occur almost as regularly as holidays. Every year or two, Moody’s command structure changes.

A change of command is the opportunity for Moody to redouble its best efforts throughout the ranks. It should also be viewed as an opportunity for our entire community to re-double our efforts, not just to welcome the new commanders but to provide a hospitable stay for all of the brave young men and women stationed at Moody.

Valdosta-Lowndes County has a fine history of inspiring everyone from base commanders to airmen to either stay or return to South Georgia upon retirement from the military. It is a tradition that has greatly benefited our community.

Last week, Col. Billy D. Thompson relinquished command of the 23rd Wing while Col. Chad P. Franks assumed command.

We welcome Col. Franks to South Georgia and we hope he enjoys his time here.

We wish Col. Thompson well in his travels and future endeavors. If he ever considers Valdosta after the military, we’ll be glad to welcome him back just as South Georgia has made a home for so many commanders from the past.
