A tasty tradition

The Valdosta Daily Times

VALDOSTA — Driving along Baytree Road today, you may experience a little more traffic congestion than is normal around Temple Israel.

Today is the first day of the Temple’s annual Kosher Corned Beef Sandwich Sale. It also marks the first time that the Temple has made the sale public on a Friday. It continues Sunday, March 10, and Monday, March 11.

The sale has become a Valdosta tradition. If you don’t believe it, swing by the Temple at lunch on any of these days. You will see car after car driving up and around the Temple to pick up the lunch of a third-pound of corned beef sandwich, chips, dill pickle, drink, a dessert, and condiments. Temple Israel expects to sell more than 5,500 sandwiches this year.

Donating a portion of the proceeds to a worthy cause in the Valdosta-Lowndes County community is another sandwich sale tradition. This year that cause is the Rotary Club’s law-enforcement support fund recently touted during the annual Law-Enforcement Appreciation Dinner.

The fund provides area law-enforcement officers with financial help during illness, death, a house fire, or in other dire circumstances. The law-enforcement fund pays back the service which police officers and deputies contribute to the good of our region.

So does the sandwich sale.

If you have already purchased a ticket, don’t forget to pick up your corned beef sandwich this weekend or Monday. If you don’t have a ticket, stop by the Temple and buy a sandwich. You can eat inside or take it to go.

And don’t worry about traffic. Another tradition: Temple Israel members keep the sandwiches and cars moving.
