Thumbs up, thumbs down

November 15, 2013 The Valdosta Daily Times

-- — THUMBS UP: To the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts for a fun and rollicking presentation of the internationally touring musical “The Addams Family.” A few different twists (and fingersnaps) for a family familiar to generations.

THUMBS UP: Dewar Elementary School teacher Sara Wilder and her 2012-13 students. As part of a class project, Wilder’s students created a book called “Our Adventures in History.” The students wrote all of the text and created all of the illustrations. Now, the book has been published.

THUMBS UP: To all people giving to the Red Cross and other charitable organizations to help the people in the storm-ravaged Philippines. News accounts have detailed the anatomy of a catastrophic tragedy. There is nothing that can be done to remedy the thousands of lives lost to the storm, but contributions can help save additional lives in the aftermath and ease many burdens.

THUMBS UP: To Lowndes High baseball seniors Josh Day, Cory Pope, and Logan Hutchinson. This week, the three players officially signed with colleges for baseball scholarships, securing an opportunity to continue playing ball while continuing their education.

THUMBS DOWN: To receiving voter location cards after the Nov. 5 election. Several people have reported receiving their polling place cards in the mail after the Nov. 5 election in Lowndes County. With fewer polling places available, these cards were important because they notified where registered voters should vote in the municipal and countywide SPLOST VII election. For many voters, they needed to vote at a different location for this election. Some cards arrived the day after the election. Some voters have reported receiving their cards this past week.
