On the go this weekend

The Valdosta Daily Times

VALDOSTA — Take a breath. Get your running shoes on. Check the fuel gauge in the car. It’s a busy weekend ... if you want it.

Morven celebrates the region’s peach crop with the long-running annual Peach Festival Saturday.

On Saturday morning, the Lowndes County Historical Society Museum hosts author Victoria Wilcox with a new Doc Holliday book, “Southern Son: The Saga of Doc Holliday, Book One: Inheritance.” She will also discuss the relationship between this Old West legend with the legendary “Gone With the Wind.”

Classic car lovers should find several reasons to visit the Valdosta Mall area Saturday morning and early afternoon for the South Georgia Classic Car Club’s Seventh Annual Super Cruise-In.

Nashville kicks off the Smithsonian’s Georgia New Harmonies exhibit Saturday with a look at the nationally touring exhibit as well as a regional display, a fiddle concert event, and other activities. The exhibit will stay in Nashville through the end of June.

These are only a few events scheduled for this weekend in Valdosta and in the surrounding              region. If you look at most of the ones named, these events honor parts of South Georgia’s culture: the Georgia peach, a famed Western figure who spent part of his childhood in Valdosta, a love for cars in an event right off Interstate 75, the Berrien County fiddlers who have been named to the state hall of fame.

Attending these events and others is not only fun but it teaches visitors something about our community, something of our culture, people and history. They are reminders of who we are, where we’ve been and where we’re going.

And all many of us have to do Saturday is put on our shoes and go.
