VSU Softball scores again

The Valdosta Daily Times

-- — This season has not had the dramatic run of 36 wins in a row as last year, but Valdosta State University Softball continued another record-breaking streak this past weekend: Winning a fifth straight Gulf South Conference tournament championship.

And with its 4-3 victory Sunday over Alabama-Huntsville, VSU Softball won the championship in a different but no less dramatic fashion. VSU came back from being three behind to win the game.

From this win, VSU hosts the South Regional Tournament this weekend. Last year, VSU Softball won this tournament, too, which set into motion the team winning the 2012 national championship.

It’s too early to know where the team may go this year, but one thing is for certain, in winning the Gulf South Conference tournament championship for the fifth year straight, VSU Softball has done something no other softball team has ever done.

As VSU Softball head coach Thomas Macera said this past weekend, “They never give up. Five straight conference championships has never been done and everyone knows the Gulf South Conference is the best conference in the country. For years, it has been Alabama-Huntsville being so dominant, and everyone knows what they have done. But now, it is Valdosta State’s time.”

We hope that time stretches toward national play again, but today, we congratulate VSU Softball for exemplifying the championship spirit of never giving up, of overcoming odds to excel.
