The Valdosta Daily Times
The Times’ weekly It’s All About You feature turns toward agriculture for the month of July. Farming is sometimes referred to as the region’s past, but a short drive proves agriculture is alive and well in South Georgia. Drive a short distance outside of the Valdosta city limits in any direction and the signs of agriculture’s importance are everywhere.
Rows of corn, cotton and other crops stretch to the horizons. Farmers working fields, irrigation systems pumping water, tractors tilling soil: These are only a few signs of agriculture’s continued importance in our region.
In some cases, these farm lands have been in families for generations. They are fields with long histories but fields that still produce foods for area tables and provide a living for area farmers.
Downtown Valdosta’s Farm Days showcase these efforts, reminding people of the rich culture surrounding us, while providing fresh produce for people to prepare for their family meals.
Agriculture is a blessing for our region and for people in places throughout the nation and around the world. Farming’s impact on the region’s history, culture, and economy is immeasurable.
It’s All About You stories run each Wednesday on The Times’ front page through 2013. Each month has a selected theme.
So, join us for the five Wednesdays of July to see how agriculture is all about you.
