The Valdosta Daily Times
THUMBS UP: To the organizers of two events that raised thousands of dollars for Valdosta State University scholarships last weekend. Dancing with the Valdosta Stars raised about $38,000 for VSU performing arts scholarships. The Lee Anthony Crews Memorial No-Tap Bowling Tournament and Auction raised approximately $7,000 for VSU criminal justice scholarships.
THUMBS UP: To the Mailbox Club for its continued devotion to children throughout the United States and around the world. Last week, two international missionaries visited the Mailbox Club’s Valdosta-based headquarters to touch base and share how the organization’s Bible-based materials are changing the lives of children in Bangladesh and Central America.
THUMBS UP: To VSU Department of Public Administration which honored several people during its recognition luncheon this week. The event honored Hugh C. Bailey Outstanding MPA Student recipients Joshua Allred and Daniel Lohr, the Loyce W. Turner Outstanding Public Official recipient Sementha Mathews, and Dr. Nolan Argyle who is retiring after 28 years at VSU.
THUMBS UP: To the Lowndes High School tennis teams sweeping the Region 1-AAAAAA titles this week. Both Lowndes teams won championships and are number one seeds in next week’s state tournament.
THUMBS DOWN: To those spreading fear and confusion regarding the Boston Marathon bombings, the mailing of ricin, and the explosion of a Texas fertilizer plant. While news agencies do not always get things right, it seems they have a higher degree of accuracy of hoaxes and misinformation choking Facebook and other social media, many of which foster fear, anger and hate. We are reminded of the wise words of Franklin D. Roosevelt: “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
