THUMBS UP: To House of Heroes. This week, approximately 160 teenage and 40 adult volunteers repaired and tended the South Georgia houses of five World War II-era veterans. The Rev. Wayne Anthony, Lake Park United Methodist Church pastor, founded the House of Heroes while in Columbus, Ga. The project has spread to cities across the United States. Though Anthony has been assigned to a Methodist church in Macon, House of Heroes will continue in the Valdosta-area.
THUMBS UP: To Tyler Walker. The recent Valdosta State University Music graduate will travel in July to the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, to study piano. He won the opportunity performing in competition.
THUMBS UP: To Gwen Register-Thomas. She noticed only a few children swimming in the pool at Mildred Hunter Community Center and learned many children could not afford the $1-a-day fee. Thomas began raising money to buy passes for children so they can swim in the pool.
THUMBS UP: To Allie Thomas. She paid off the mortgage of her Habitat for Humanity house this week, becoming the Valdosta chapter's first paid-off mortgage this year.
