Thumbs up

The Valdosta Daily Times

-- — THUMBS UP: To The Times readers who have already taken advantage of envelopes to send monetary contributions to the Empty Stocking Fund. The envelopes will hopefully make it easier for readers to ensure that no child awakes Christmas morning to an empty stocking.

THUMBS UP: To Valdosta Police Lt. Earl Durrance. A 25-year-plus veteran of the Valdosta police force, Durrance received the City of Valdosta’s employee of the month award for saving a teen who lost a leg along a railroad track. On Thursday night, Durrance signed over his $200 employee of the month bonus to help the young man’s family. Durrance is more than an employee of the month, or one of the VPD’s best of the best, his act demonstrates the finest qualities of being a human being.

THUMBS UP: To University of Georgia freshman and Valdosta High graduate Pierce Wallace whose “Georgia Joker” character at UGA games has led to ESPN listing him as a Top 10 finalist for the cable sports channel’s “Fan Hall of Fame.” Georgia Joker fans can vote for Pierce at http://fanhalloffame.com/vote/2013/pierce-wallace-georgia-joker/

THUMBS UP: To Valdosta State University’s new Health Sciences and Business Administration building as it nears completion. Located on VSU’s north campus, the new building will provide students with a wide array of state-of-the-art services for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Division of Social Work, Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Sports Medicine/Athletic Training Programs, Exercise Physiology Program and the College of Business Administration.
