The holiday season is upon us. While it’s a time of joy for many, it is also a time of stress. Unrealistic expectations to create the perfect holiday, buy the perfect gift, and be the perfect hosts creates disappointment when those lofty expectations cannot be met.
For others, the holiday season is a time of loneliness and solitude. They may not have family to celebrate with, are unable to travel, or can’t afford to observe Christmas like others can.
Keeping the spirit of joy and happiness alive through the holidays can be challenging. It is when we remember to take care of others that most people find their greatest happiness.
There are many opportunities in the community to spread joy this holiday season by helping others. Volunteering, donating, cooking, visiting, and spending time doing for those less fortunate can turn around anyone’s holiday doldrums.
The Salvation Army is currently in need of bell ringers to take shifts at a number of red kettle locations through Christmas. The Empty Stocking Fund needs donations to ensure that all children will have a gift under their tree. Other opportunities include Toys for Tots, the various Angel trees, nursing homes, military families, and much more. All you have to do is take the time to find the cause that holds meaning for you.
Creating the perfect holiday may not be a realistic goal, but spreading the joy of Christmas by helping others can ensure that your holiday will be a meaningful one.
