Thumbs up

January 3, 2014 The Valdosta Daily Times

-- — THUMBS UP: To the Valdosta/Lowndes County Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Association for its 29th Annual Founders Banquet scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today, James H. Rainwater Conference Center. With its theme of “After 50 Years, What Has Happened to the Dream,” the banquet kicks off several events throughout the month to commemorate the birth of King, whose birthday is celebrated as a national holiday this year on Jan. 20.

THUMBS UP: To the South Georgia Regional Library for hosting “Snow Day” Friday. Not only was the chilly weather perfect for the library’s annual day, but organizers created a fun event on a week day for kids still out of school for the Christmas break.

THUMBS UP: To the news that the Highway 84 overpass is 20 percent ahead of schedule. Granted, the project is not scheduled to be completed until Dec. 31, 2014, but word that the project is ahead of where it is expected to be ranks as good news for people regularly traveling West Hill Avenue and for businesses lining the route.

THUMBS UP: To retiring Valdosta Fire Chief J.D. Rice. Officially, Rice retired Dec. 31 after serving more than 18 years as chief, but he will remain in the position for several more weeks until the City of Valdosta can hire someone to take the fire chief position. Thank you, Chief Rice, for your service to the city.
