Beware of the cold

The Valdosta Daily Times

VALDOSTA — When you started your day this morning, the temperatures were hovering around freezing and are only expected to warm up to the high 40’s today. And the worst is yet to come.

In addition to cold weather, the wind is supposed to be an issue today with a wind chill advisory in effect, along with a freeze watch and a freeze warning. Although temperatures will rebound somewhat over the weekend, by Monday, highs will again be in the 40’s for highs and below freezing at night.

As a popular cartoon making the rounds the last few weeks says, Welcome to South Georgia Weather, with figures drawn wearing shorts one day and a parka the next. The 30 degree swings in temperature from day to day trigger thermostat battles in some households, while others battled the inevitable cold and flu symptoms making the rounds.

Cold air doesn’t cause illness, but it does bring people in closer contact with others who pass the germs on. One sick child sent to school or a sick adult at work can infect dozens of others, so staying home at the first sign of symptoms and seeking medical attention is strongly suggested.

It will be cold enough in the next few nights to freeze pipes, so leave a trickle of water running if your pipes are exposed. Bring your pets indoors and ensure that their water bowls do not freeze, and wash your hands frequently with soap and water if you have contact with a sick individual.

If you haven’t gotten one yet, get your flu shot as it’s successfully protecting against the strains making the rounds this year, and bundle up, as this is just the first real taste of biting cold so far this winter.
