Give the gift of life

The Valdosta Daily Times

VALDOSTA — It’s the second day of the new year and time to make good on those resolutions you made. If one of them was to be kinder to others, be selfless or to give back to the community, then you will have the perfect opportunity Friday to make good on that resolution.

The American Red Cross is celebrating blood and platelet donors during National Blood Donor Month by holding a day-long blood drive at the Valdosta Donor Center. From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, you can donate blood and fulfill your resolution.

Donations are generally down through the holidays, with school out and people traveling, and the Red Cross was struggling to meet their goal in December. It’s a critical time for blood donations with the onset of flu season, which limits those who can give. Nationwide, 15,000 pints are needed every single day, and locally, several hundred units are needed to replenish supplies every month.

All blood types are needed and donors are encouraged to call and schedule a time at (229) 241-1141 for Friday.

And if you miss the event tomorrow, don’t worry, you can still stop by the Valdosta Daily Times office at 201 N. Troup St. from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 6.

If you are healthy and an eligible blood donor, please consider giving the gift of life.
