VALDOSTA — THUMBS UP: To Valdosta High School, Principal Dr. Janice Richardson, and English teacher Pam Childress for reviving a debate team after a 15-year absence. Since its new inception this summer, the VHS debate team has seen student interest increase and students have won spots for state. Most importantly, students are becoming informed citizens.

THUMBS UP: To the 10 Valdosta State University football players named this week to the All-Gulf South Conference. They are Chris Pope, Lawrence Virgil, Dominique Wheeler, Seantavius Jones, Cedric O’Neal, Dominic DeMasi  (all first team); Regginald Lewis, Felei Tuavae, Jeremy Grable, Tevin Davis (all second team).  

THUMBS UP: To the Valdosta Junior Service League for the annual Merry Marketplace. Dubbed a “Holiday Shopping Extravaganza,” the Merry Marketplace provides an early opportunity for area shoppers. The event runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. today and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission: $5, adult; $1, child. Proceeds given to area charities.

THUMBS UP: To Echols County’s 53-year tradition of honoring state legislators. The event pays tribute to current and past legislators, but it also gives Echols County a chance to showcase its attributes. The Echols County Legislative Appreciative Lunch was held this week.
