THUMBS UP: To Georgia Christian School. This week, the school announced that President George W. Bush will be the 2014 keynote speaker for the annual benefit dinner. President Bush is the latest in a stellar line of GCS speakers which has included football great Terry Bradshaw, GOP presidential contender Mike Huckabee, and former First Lady Laura Bush. GCS’s success has also influenced other regional groups to attempt similar fundraising efforts.

THUMBS UP: To the Valdosta Police Department's recent promotions of officers and staff. The VPD promoted Jo Ann Rofulowitz, Ben Brinson, Timothy Pickett, Tomas Chavarria, Robert Renfroe, Brian Wood, Christopher Crews, Scottie Johns, Gerald Watts, Heather Willis, Rosie Lake, Julie Mugrove. The promotions were made in a ceremony that included mates, children and parents, showing that the police force is not just a job but a family.

THUMBS UP: To Valdosta State University junior baseball player Mike Reed who was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week. In the 5-0 Blazers’ three-game sweep of the Paine College Lions, Reed hit .667 with two doubles, eight RBIs and seven runs scored. He also stole a base in his only attempt. Welcome back, VSU baseball.

THUMBS UP: To Freddie Broome. The Winston-Salem, N.C., assistant fire chief was named this week as Valdosta's first new fire chief in nearly 20 years. He will take the reins of the Valdosta Fire Department in March. Welcome to Valdosta, Chief Broome.
