Rant & Rave for Monday, Oct. 6, 2008

Isn't it the duty of the sheriff's department to inform its citizens of such a large amount of break-ins in any particular neighborhood? I had my vehicle broken into and only then did I hear of at least five others within a three mile radius. Come on LCSD, do your job. The next car could be yours or one of your loved ones.

We can fix the economy by going back to closing businesses on Sunday. Imagine the money we could save as well as spending quality time with our families. More than the economy can be healed if we get back to the basics of true family living.

To all of the women out there who keep money in your bras: Please remove it before you get to the cashier. Ignorance really is sometimes bliss. As a cashier, I'd rather not know that the money you hand me was touching your breasts.

There is more to "perfect teeth" than meets the eye. Not only do braces serve to straighten one's teeth, in some cases they also can correct malalignment which can cause jaw problems and premature grinding down of one's teeth. Quite often braces are a form of functional therapy, not just a cosmetic fix.

Lake Park, do you know where your children are? I can tell you — skateboarding in the Winn Dixie parking area at 4:45 a.m.

A rave to Valdosta, again! I was recently in the emergency room here in Kalamazoo, Mich. and noticed that the attending physician had a familiar Southern accent. When I inquired as to what part of the South she said, “A little city called Valdosta.” I was so excited as I spent my childhood summers in Valdosta and always enjoy the occasional coincidence of meeting a Valdostan. I asked her for a "hometown" employee medical discount but doubt I'll get that kind of hospitality.

Teachers work eight to 10 hour days. They do not get overtime. Teacher pay is a joke. They even have to buy most of their own supplies. They educate, entertain, motivate, and discipline. If there is something wrong in education, look elsewhere. Teachers give everything they have to help our children succeed. Do you do all that at your job?

Brooks County School District, like many other districts, is working hard to improve their schools. However, they should consider that their teachers are well-educated and dedicated. The teachers are the ones who make learning happen each day. They are the ones out on the front line. Administration should give them the credit and respect they deserve. It is the teachers who truly know and love our individual kids for who they are.
