OUR OPINION: A crying shame
The Air Force struck a deal with a company to come in and purchase what's left of the Magnolia Grove Moody AFB housing project, along with the uncompleted projects at three other bases, but has only been able to figure out a way to give some subcontractors back half of their money and others less than 30 percent to satisfy liens against the development filed when the former contractor never paid millions of dollars in bills.
Shameless.
In a week filled with billion dollar payoffs to big business and corporate America, a month filled with billion dollar buyouts of AIG, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, etc., what the Air Force and Congress perpetrated on this community is deplorable.
The people your Congress and Senators voted to bail out got themselves in the financial state they're in through greed, lust for easy money, and a series of bad financial decisions.
The subcontractors got themselves in the situation they are in because they trusted the federal government to do the right thing and pay them as promised.
Shameful.
What's left standing isn't worth living in and there is no infrastructure yet in place, so at this point, the Air Force should have scrapped the Moody embarrassment and used the money to pay for the work that has already been done. It was a flawed project doomed to fail at the outset through unfortunate top-down decisions, and the mistakes are still coming. The money estimated to complete the project is ridiculously low when you consider there isn't a contractor or businessman within hundreds of miles who will work on this project again without cash in hand, in advance.
After all, the Air Force has already proven they can't be trusted, Congress has demonstrated that big business is worthy of big bailouts but small business isn't worth their time or attention, and the community, along with the men and women at Moody, have been overlooked and underpaid.
Shame on all who could have helped but didn't, but especially those who act as though these subs should be grateful they are ‘only’ losing half their money. And the continued lack of accountability for this debacle is yet another sign that what would be a criminal act for regular Americans is just another day at the office for our government officials.
