OUR OPINION: Fay on the way?
Weather watchers glued to the latest news on tropical storms have seen the storm named Fay waffle between a tropical storm just on the edge of becoming a hurricane as it lashed the Florida Keys with heavy rain on Monday.
Forecasters predict the storm’s path will steer it either directly over us or near us mid-week, bringing potentially heavy rain and strong wind with it.
After the past several years of hurricane activity, most in this region are generally not panicked very easily, and most have been through enough to know what necessities to have on hand just in case they are without electricity or cable for a while. However, it never hurts to be prepared and cautious, and there are simple things everyone can do to protect your property.
In heavy winds in South Georgia, the rollout trash bins tend to be flown about. If there is any way you can secure yours in your garage, carport, outbuilding, etc., it will save you and your neighbors from chasing them down the street.
If you have a low hanging limb or dead tree in your yard, now is the time to consider trimming it. If you have pets that normally stay outside, find a way to keep them safe in an indoor space until the storm passes.
If you have any special dietary needs or prescriptions that need refilling, consider stocking up with a few days supply on hand. Keep gas in your car, non-perishable food and water in your home, extra cash on hand, flashlights and batteries, and charge up any electronics such as cell phones in advance just in case.
With Fay being a few days away, we should have plenty of warning if the storm becomes a hurricane and threatens our area, but chances are she won’t be the last storm that threatens our region this year. A little precaution now could save you time and energy over the next few months.
