Our Opinion: Panhandling ordinance on target

The Valdosta Daily Times

The Valdosta City Council will have a second reading for a consideration of a panhandling/solicitation ordinance at its next meeting July 24. The ordinance will allow officers to issue a written citation for the first offense, followed by increasing penalties up to a misdemeanor charge punishable by up to 30 days and/or a fine.

The city is responding to escalating issues with panhandlers at nearly every interstate exit and major intersection in the city. Callers to rant and rave have complained for months about the issue, many claiming that the panhandlers are working the corners as jobs, with shifts being worked by several swapping off throughout the day. Callers have also complained about an escalating number of threats and violent overtures from the panhandlers when their requests for cash are denied.

Despite the city’s growing population, now’s the time to take action to prevent these and other big city issues from infiltrating the community. Valdosta is what it is due largely to its charm and friendliness, and despite the care and concern shown to a number of those panhandling, they continue to trespass on private property, disrupt the flow of traffic, and in several cases, threaten citizens’ safety.

No one is unsympathetic towards those less fortunate, and much care and concern has been shown to try and help those who are in true need while preventing those just trying to make a quick buck from preying on others. But citizens and visitors alike need to be assured that when they drive in Valdosta, they will be safe, unaccosted, and treated with respect. Kudos to the city for taking proactive action on the issue.
