Rant & Rave for Thursday, July 3, 2008

The Valdosta Daily Times

We in Lake Park also have a problem with golf carts. They dart across the road and never look where they are going. You must be 16 to drive a car but 10 and 12-year-olds zig-zag everywhere on golf carts. When one gets hit, I hope that the police then realize that they are illegal and do something about them.

To the person complaining about dead-beat dads: Yes it does go both ways. My son also was a victim of a woman who refused to let him see his son. After several thousand dollars and a lot of time, we prevailed. Adults should learn to put their children first and their hurt feelings last.

Thank you Ray City for the warm welcome of the South Georgia Jeeping Association. Anyone interested in joining us visit www.southgajeepingassoc.wetpaint.com Again a big thank you and special thanks to Rick.

Sadly, a lot of folks don't care about helping a fellow motorist. Other states have what is called the "Good Samaritan law.” It's time for Georgia to get this. I hate that it takes a law to get people to do what they should.

On July 9, we need to have as many people as possible to pack Bazemore-Hyder Stadium when ESPN is in town filming for TitleTown USA. Everyone needs to come together as a whole for the community, not for just one school to show why Valdosta is Titletown USA.

Most Americans are woefully ignorant of the oil and gas business. It’s a high-risk business that takes an incredible capital investment and more times than not, drilling results in a dry hole. Targets are no longer shallow and easy to define, they are deep and very complex. Americans became addicted to cheap oil and now, like the heroin addict, are suffering withdrawal symptoms. Guess how much oil the U.S. Dept. of Engery produces?

Did anyone read the article in Monday's VDT about new trash restrictions? In the first paragraph of the article it said that ONLY people in the county's unincorporated areas would be allowed to drop their waste off at the recycling centers — all others would be turned away. What are the citizens of Hahira, Remerton, Lake Park and Dasher supposed to do with their garbage? It also said that people should expect a fee to be placed on items dropped off by Sept. 1. Isn't that double billing? I live in one of the areas mentioned above and I pay my taxes to Lowndes County and not the city and I feel that entitles me to use the recycling center — without harassment. Wonder if I would be able to use the new horse arena — or are there restrictions on it also?

Of course you’re not getting a cost of living wage. The county commissioners are old men who think gas still costs 50 cents a gallon and think milk is delivered to your door. Besides that, try keeping the commissioners awake during a meeting and you will have won half the battle.
