The Valdosta City School System is making many strides toward improving the quality of education for students of all abilities and learning levels.
For those who are more advanced and in need of a highly challenging curriculum, the system is beginning its International Baccalariat program. IB students will be held to higher and more stringent standards in a learning environment designed to foster initiative, high performance and academic achievement.
And now the system has announced its new partnership with Valdosta State University, the Valdosta Early College Academy, which will allow middle schoolers the opportunity to enroll in the program and potentially earn 60 college credits by the time they graduate from high school. VECA will be housed at the former S.L. Mason Elementary School in Valdosta, close to the VSU campus.
Highly motivated students who need assistance in order to achieve their potential are encouraged to consider the program, and information sessions are planned to present more information to parents. The first session is tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the First Antioch Baptist Church, with a second session scheduled for the McMullen Southside Library from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
If you are interested in learning about what the academy has to offer to your child, you should attend one of the learning sessions to find out more information. And if you have a child at Valdosta High School who is interested in the IB program, contact the school system to learn more.
The most important element in a child’s education is having a parent who is willing to be involved, so regardless of your child’s skill level, parents need to encourage their children and engage them in the learning process. An education is the gift that lasts a lifetime. Kudos to Valdosta for being proactive and helping children of all abilities excel.
