John A. McKinnon Sr.

-- — The family of John A. McKinnon Sr. regrets to annouce the passing of their father on September 28, 2013 at his residence.

Mr. McKinnon was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mildred Louise Rentz McKinnon who died on May 10, 2013. She was a wonderful wife and very special mother to five children. He loved her dearly. He always said she was the most beautiful woman from the day he met her until the day she passed away. Mr. McKinnon was also preceded in death by a grandson in 198, John Phillip Conner, who was honored by having his grandfather’s name.

Mr. McKinnon was born in Berrien County to James (Jim) and Bessie Avera McKinnon on January 20, 1925. John wore many hats in his lifetime. At the age of 11, he worked at Harvey’s Supermarket selling Coca Colas with Joe Harvey, Jr. When he was 15, he worked on a traveling grocery truck with his brother, Aubrey McKinnon. This is where he met his wife, Mildred Rentz. She came out to the road and sold eggs from her father’s farm to John on the grocery truck. He married her on January 16, 1945.

Mr. McKinnon served in the United States Navy in World War II in the European and the Pacific Theatre of War where he served on an LST ship. He lived in Berrien County most of his life and was a well-known painter, refinished furniture and helped his father, Jim McKinnon, paint signs.

Mr. McKinnon moved to Tallahassee in 1968 where he bought several exterminating businesses and stayed there for 20 years. While in Tallahassee, he was a member of the Crawfordville Baptist Church and as ordained as a deacon. Mr. McKinnon then moved to Thomasville for a short time before returning back to his roots and moving back to Berrien County. Until his illness, Mr. McKinnon enjoyed gardening, yard work, wood working, and on Saturdays you could find him in Tifton at the Flea Market selling his goods. He was a “walking library” of Berrien County history. He has sat for hours telling stories of this town and its people. With his passing goes a whole library of knowledge about the history of a small town.

Mr. McKinnon is survived by his five children who cared for him during his long illness. May he tend God’s garden, paint the heavens gold with his smile and keep the angels laughing with his jokes. We will love you and Mama forever. His survivors are: Sandy (Harry) Keen of Warwick, JoAnn ( the late Allen) Anderson of Nashville, Linda (Frank) McLendon of Nashville, Shirley (Ken) Douglas of Leesburg, John Alec (June) McKinnon, Jr of Tifton; 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday October 1, 2013 at 11 AM in Westview Cemetery with the Rev. Chad Hall officiating. There is no formal visitation. — Lovein Funeral Home, Nashville.
