James Lovett Dewar Jr.

VALDOSTA — James Lovett Dewar Jr., 71, of Valdosta, Ga., died April 7, 2014, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Jimmy was born on Feb. 12, 1943, in Hazlehurst, Ga., to the late Dorothy Herndon Dewar and James Lovett Dewar Sr. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Valdosta.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Mackey Dewar; son, James Lovett Dewar III and partner Richard Usher of Atlanta; daughter, Catherine Rose Dewar Kerns and husband Patrick William Kerns of Valdosta; grandchildren, William, Jake, and Caroline Kerns; stepsons Jack Oliver and wife Mary, Maxwell Oliver and wife Elizabeth; and Nancy Faulconer Dewar, mother of James III and Catherine. Other surviving family members include brothers-in-law and their spouses, Mac and Susan Mackey, William and Pam Mackey of Valdosta; cousins, Bill and Fann Dewar Greer of Norfolk, Va.; Bob and Sarah Dewar of Hahira; Judson and Bonnie Dewar of Fort Myers, Fla.; and Larry and Jan Nicholson of Sea Island, Ga. and their families.

After graduating from Valdosta High School in 1960, Jimmy earned a business degree from the University of Georgia in 1964. During college, he joined Kappa Alpha Fraternity where he made many lifelong friends.

His primary interest was always business and in 1971, he founded Dewar Properties Incorporated, a successful real estate development and property management company. His accomplishments include serving on the Board of Directors of the Valdosta Boys Club and later served as Chairman of the Board for The Park Avenue Bank. Jimmy was also a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Valdosta.

He always had a love for the water, where he spent much of his time boating and traveling to the Caribbean Islands. He also thoroughly enjoyed golfing with his many friends at both the Valdosta and Highlands, North Carolina country clubs.

The visitation will be held on from 6–8 p.m. today at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.

The funeral will be held the following afternoon on Friday, April 11, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Valdosta. Dr. William Greer will officiate. Afterwards, there will be an interment in Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Flowers will be accepted or gifts may be made to the Valdosta State University Foundation where funds will be specifically directed to the Dewar College of Education endowment, or the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University.
