James Carl “J.C.” Williams

-- — James Carl “J.C.”  Williams departed this life on June 26, 2014, after 81 years of faithful service to God and his country.  He was born Oct. 10, 1932 to Leroy Williams and Bertha McCoggle Williams, and he was raised in Jones’ Community in Lowndes County, Ga.  He graduated from Dasher High School and immediately joined the Air Force where he attained the rank of Tech Sergeant, retiring with 20 years of dedicated service.  He then joined the Valdosta Police Department where he moved through the ranks from Patrolman to Detective to Sgt. and then to Captain in 1994, becoming Valdosta’s First African American Police Captain, subsequently retiring after 20 years of service.

After retirement, J.C. continued to serve his community.  He was a deacon at St.  Phillips AME Church, where he served faithfully until his death. He also remained very active in the American Veteran’s Association (AMVETS) and served as both local and Georgia State Commander.  He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends and was a member of the local Pinochle Club.  However, his favorite past-time of all was fishing, and many family members and friends can recount with fondness his fishing escapades.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Leroy and Bertha Williams; two brothers, Willie Lee and Roy William; two sisters, Bessie Grant and Maggie Lee, and his loving aunt Goldie Bell Mobley.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 53 years, Frances D. Williams, and their three children, Shirley Davis (Calvin) of Valdosta; Shernetta Taylor (Earl) of Cocoa, Fla.; and James Jr. (Rhonda) of Waycross.  Also, three daughters, Jacalyn Smith, Rosalyn Ann Holmes, and Edwina Smith of Las Vegas, Nev.  His eight grandchildren, Gowan Williams, Latisha Williams, Earl Taylor, Jr., Alexander Parker, Shaeyla Davis, Adrianna Williams, James Williams III and Jordan Williams will always remember him as their fun-loving grandfather.  In addition, he leaves nine great-grandchildren, a sister in-law and brother-in-law Ruth and Alfred Wesley; and a host of relatives and friends who will remember him with affection.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org in his name.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at 11 a.m.  at St. Phillip Jones’ Community Bible Church, 2336 Hwy.  84 W.  Rev. Deborah Sirmans, pastor, officiating.  Burial will follow in the Pallbearers Cemetery.  Public viewing will be held on today from 10 a.m. -8 p.m. at the funeral home. — Stevens Funeral Home of Valdosta
