Georgia Alma Johnson Scherban, 89, of Jasper, Fla. passed away Friday, Dec. 6, 2013 at Suwannee Valley Nursing Center following an extended illness. Alma was born on Dec. 17, 1923 in Hahira, Ga. to the late Ivey and Estelle Kelly Johnson. On April 19, 1943 in Valdosta, Ga., she was married to Michael Scherban, and the two moved to Mike’s hometown in Hartford, Conn. They retired in 1973 and moved to Jasper, Fla. Alma was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jasper, Fla. where she enjoyed singing in the church choir and was a Church Elder. Alma worked for many years at Kayo’s Drugstore. She loved to read and enjoyed traveling. She lived life to the fullest, and when she could no longer live on her own, she went to live at Suwannee Valley Nursing Center. Alma enjoyed her life there and loved the staff. She will always be remembered and loved by everyone that knew her. Alma was predeceased by her parents, Ivey and Estelle Johnson, her husband of 56 years, Michael Scherban, her son, Dwight M. Scherban and a sister, Doris Molle.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Henry Groll, Jasper, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Maria Mendez-Scherban, Marlborough, Conn.; two brothers, Paul Johnson (Linda) and Jimmy Johnson, of Hahira, Ga.; two sisters, Louise Vinson (Jack), Jasper, Fla. and Mary Ann Lastinger (Ronnie), Hahira, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Eva Pelczar, Hartford, Conn. and Monya Washer, Wethersfield, Conn.; two grandchildren, Christina and Michael Scherban; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2013 in the chapel of Harry T. Reid Funeral Home, Jasper, Fla. with Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Jasper, FL. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday beginning at 10:00 a.m. for one hour prior to the service.
