Edwina “Bootsie” Roberts Smotherman

-- — Edwina “Bootsie” Roberts Smotherman died on Dec. 7, 2013 at Langdale Hospice House.  She was born in Valdosta on Oct. 29, 1927, the youngest child of Mary Converse Roberts and John Young Roberts.  She will be remembered for her spiritual gifts of generosity, mercy, encouragement, and hospitality, all reflective of her love for the Savior she served faithfully at Westminster Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church.

Bootsie enthusiastically enjoyed life, her beloved family and her involvement in civic, cultural and social organizations and endeavors.  She had a deep appreciation for her life-long roots in Valdosta and worked with local historical and preservation efforts.

She was predeceased by her husband Fred L. Smotherman, sisters Mary Young Oliver, Minnie Williams and Edith Roberts, and her brother Johnny Roberts.  Survivors include her children Mary Young Manning (Jimmy), Kathryn Willamson (Davis), Fred Smotherman (Teresa), Emily Smotherman, and John Smotherman (Lang); her grandchildren Lee Boatenreiter (Melissa), Rebecca Ash (Brian), Chase Williamson (Isabelle), Parrish Jenkins (Andrew), Gayle Smotherman, Briggs Smotherman and Allie Smotherman; her great-grandchildren Carter Boatenreiter, Converse Boatenreiter, Edie Ash and Emily Ash; her sister-in-law Betty Ragan, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Many caring hands and hearts were involved in Bootsie’s care in later years.  The family extends grateful thanks to those at Fellowship Home, South Georgia Medical Center and Langdale Hospice House.  Bootsie and her family were also blessed with special caregivers Lucille Berrian, Carol Hill, Louell Black and Valerie Smith.

The family will gather for a private graveside service. The family will then receive friends on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013 at The Converse Dalton Ferrell House in downtown Valdosta from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Break Bread Ministry of First Presbyterian Church, Lowndes County Historical Society, Valdosta Heritage Foundation (Roberts House Restoration), Valdosta Junior Service League, Langdale Hospice House or your charity of choice.  Condolences may be conveyed to the family on the obituary page of — Carson McLane Funeral Home
