Columbus Washington, Sr.

VALDOSTA — Columbus Washington Sr. has left an indelible fingerprint on the Valdosta Community over the past 60 plus years. Perhaps you’ve visited the post office downtown, or maybe you have shopped at  5 Points Shopping Center or saw the brick entrance sign at Valdosta High School. If you have lived in or are familiar with the subdivision of Wood Valley, Forrest Manor Apartments, Academy Acres, Hightower Subdivision, or the Hudson Dockett projects, then you have seen the  handiwork of Columbus Washington. In fact, Washington Street, in the Hudson Dockett area was named after him.

Mr. Columbus, as he was affectionately known, was born on Dec. 14, 1924 in the Mineola area of Lowndes County to Joseph and Jessie Ponder Washington. He was the second of eight children. From their union, the couple was blessed with five children, Ms. Annie Joyce Washington Shabazz (deceased); Columbus Washington Jr. (deceased); Raymond Tyrone Washington; Kenneth Anthony Washington; and Khadijah Rhashidah Washington (Dee Dee); Mr. Washington accepted the Christian faith at a young age and he and his family were members  of Evergreen Christian Church in Valdosta.
