Columbus Washington, Sr.

VALDOSTA — Columbus Washington Sr. has left an indelible fingerprint on the Valdosta Community over the past 60 plus years. Perhaps you’ve visited the post office downtown, or maybe you have shopped at  5 Points Shopping Center or saw the brick entrance sign at Valdosta High School. If you have lived in or are familiar with the subdivision of Wood Valley, Forrest Manor Apartments, Academy Acres, Hightower Subdivision, or the Hudson Dockett projects, then you have seen the  handiwork of Columbus Washington. In fact, Washington Street, in the Hudson Dockett area was named after him.

Mr. Columbus, as he was affectionately known, was born on Dec. 14, 1924 in the Mineola area of Lowndes County to Joseph and Jessie Ponder Washington. He was the second of eight children. Mr. Washington was an  Army  veteran of World War II, having received an honorable discharge with decorations including the American Theater Service Medal, two bronze service stars, and a WWII Victory medal. Columbus attended public school in Hahira and graduated from the National Youth Administration in Jesup, Ga. at the age of 16. After school, he went to Brunswick where he learned welding and worked as a welder on U.S. Warships. Mr. Washington learned cement finishing and brick masonry after the war and formed his own masonry contracting business. Upon discharge from the Army, Mr. Columbus married Grace Thomas on Sept. 6, 1945 where they enjoyed 63 years of marital bliss. From their union, the couple was blessed with five children, Ms. Annie Joyce Washington Shabazz (deceased); Columbus Washington Jr. (deceased); Raymond Tyrone Washington; Kenneth Anthony Washington; and Khadijah Rhashidah Washington (Dee Dee); Mr. Washington accepted the Christian faith at a young age and he and his family were members  of Evergreen Christian Church in Valdosta.

Mr. Columbus passed away on May 31, 2013 at the age of 88, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Grace; parents, Joseph and Jessie Washington, Valdosta; brothers, David and Homer Lee Washington, Valdosta, and Ene Mae McDaniel, S.C.; son, Columbus Washington Jr. and Daughter, Annie Joyce Washington, both of Valdosta.

Mr. Washington leaves to  mourn his passing three children, Raymond (Sallie) Washington; Kenneth Washington, and Khadijah (Cleveland NeSmith, friend) Washington, all of Valdosta; two brothers, Semeion Washington Sr. and Freeman Washington; one sister, Mary Nell Washington, all of Valdosta; grandsons, Muhammad Ali (Donna Hinton, fiancee) Washington, Norfolk, Va.; Columbus Washington III, Roberta Washington, Akbar Washington, Reinald Mosley, Anthony Washington, Ahmed Washington, Kenneth Washington Jr., all of Valdosta; granddaughters, Aysha Kiera Washington, Portland, Ore., and April Washington, Valdosta; Remona (Lamar) Gibbs Thomas (god daughter); and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Serenity Church. The Rev. Floyd Rose, pastor and Min. Carl Dasher will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery. — Final rites are entrusted to Scott And Roberts Mortuary.
