Sarah Glass Hannay

VALDOSTA — Sarah Glass Hannay, 87, a native of Monroe, Ga., passed away Monday, July 15, 2013, at home, surrounded by family, following a long illness.

Mrs. Hannay was the daughter of the late David and Elizabeth Hibbard Glass. She was a graduate of Monroe High School, where she enjoyed playing basketball. During the Second World War, she worked in the Bell bomber plant in Marietta, Ga., where she helped assemble B-29 bombers. She was preceded in death in 2010, by her husband of 65 years, John Norman Hannay.

She is survived by her children, Richard Norman and Marsha Jones Hannay of Watkinsville, Edward Stephen (Sr.) and Jan Weeks Hannay of Valdosta; her brother, Marshall and Margaret Glass; grandchildren, Drs. Richard Scott and Jennie Higdon Hannay, John Alexander Hannay, Michael Ryan Hannay, Sarah Allison and Charles Albert Shenton IV, Edward Stephen (Jr.) and Brock Dantzler Hannay and Kaitlyn Elizabeth Hannay; great-grandchildren, Matthew Scott Hannay, William Hunter Hannay, Charles Albert Shenton V, and John Robinson Shenton.

Mrs. Hannay enjoyed her part-time employment with the Registrar’s office at the University of Georgia, as well as serving as a poll worker for several years in Athens –Clarke County.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church for over 40 years. She was a long-standing and dedicated member of the St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary, where she volunteered over 6,200 hours.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with the Rev. Sky Pratt officiating. The family will receive friends from 1– 2 p.m. prior to the service.
