Willie Bell ‘Tumpe’ Chapman

VALDOSTA — Mrs. Willie Bell “Tumpe” Chapman, 85, of Valdosta,  entered into eternal peace on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at South Georgia Medical Center.

Willie was born in Lake Park on July 18, 1928, to the parents of Jesse and Pearline Daniels. She went to Dasher High School and graduated in 1945. She went on to earn a degree in sociology from New York City College. She worked as a social worker for the New York City Department of Social Services until her retirement. She was a member of Dayspring Baptist Church, a lifetime member of the NAACP, and a loving, caring soul who was also an ordained minister.

Willie was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Chapman; parents, Jesse and Pearline; four brothers, Spencer McDaniels, Lawrence Daniels, Guy Richardson, Otis Richardson; and one sister, Mildred Daniels.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Washington of Brooklyn N.Y., Lena Hicks (William) of Cape May, N.J., Minnie Acey (Thomas) of Valdosta; her sons, Lawrence Chapman of New York City and Edward Chapman of Valdosta; 10 grandchildren, Danielle Smith, Heather Washington, Eric Hicks, Kinard Chapman, Kendrick Johnson, Aunji Hicks, Amia McGriff, Dawn Chapman, Monique Chapman and Jamal Chapman; numerous great-grandchildren; her sisters, Alice Mims (Willie Fred) and Bobbie Rene Williams, both of Tifton; and two faithful companions, China, the dog; and Pepsi, the cat; also a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Day Spring Baptist Church, 615 Dasher Lane, Valdosta.  The Rev. Phillip Corker, pastor, and the Rev. Charlie Dunbar III will officiate. Burial will follow in Rocky Hill Cemetery in Hahira.

Public viewing will be held from 2–8 p.m. today at the funeral home. — Stevens Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements.
