Retired Major Billy “Bill” Ray Davis, 77 of Quitman passed away Saturday, August 31, 2013 at his home. Mr. Davis was born March 22, 1936 in Morristown Tennessee to the late Harvey and Myrtle Greene Davis. He entered the United States Army at the age of 17 and earned the rank of Major in the 23 years he served.
He was very dedicated to his country and to the Army. Mr. Davis received several meritorious service awards and numerous other awards while serving on active duty. He was active in VFW and served as commander for several years in Quitman. Survivors include his wife, Betty Davis of Quitman; children, Sheree and Craig Carmen of Milwaukee, Wis., Billy Ray Davis, Jr. of Tampa, Fl., David Davis of Branford, Fl., Jennifer Davis of Chiefland, Fl., Phillip and Leilani Davis of Ft. White, Fl, Donald “Rusty” and Glenda Taylor of Culloden, GA., and Amy Karen Taylor of Quitman; 13 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; three sisters, Elizabeth Hyde of Morristown, TN., Mary McCarroll of Morristown, TN., and Pat Combs of Morristown, TN.; one brother, Marshall Davis of Bean Station, TN.; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Davis.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Atkinson officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home.
