December 1932-April 2013
Bobby Hatcher lived a full and interesting life. He grew up during The Depression helping his family to have enough food to eat and wood to stay warm. At 17, he joined the Marines. After Basic Training at Camp Lejeune N.C., he served in the Korean Conflict. When not fighting he was a cook’s assistant. In the Marine Corp is where he began his lifelong love of cooking.
At the end of his tour with the Marines, he joined the Army where he served for 21 years. He married the late Marian Parker Hatcher. He and his family had the opportunity to travel the country and world. They lived in Alaska, Germany, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Georgia. Bob served two tours in Vietnam. He loved the Vietnamese country, food and people (except the ones shooting at him).
He retired to live with his family in Quitman, Ga. His children Cheryl Hatcher, Ronald “Buddy” Hatcher, James “Peanut” Hatcher, and Bobby Hatcher attended Brooks County schools. During his “retirement” he worked with his brother and sister in-law Jim and Ruth Dugger at Jim’s Auto Glass in Valdosta. Lastly, he became a US Postal Rural Route Carrier in Lowndes County. Along with delivering their mail, many of his customers received a happy greeting or humorous quip. He appreciated all those who shared homemade goodies or offered a glass of tea or lemonade on a hot day. After retiring from the Postal Service, he married Gloria Cone Hatcher. This union added to his family Sherry Lancaster, Willis “Pee Wee” Lancaster and Robert Lancaster.
Bobby Hatcher was loved by almost everyone who knew him. He tried to help people when he could. He leaves behind his beloved dog Buster and cat Blue as well as a slew of family and friends. When saying good-bye to anyone he always added, “Be kind every chance you get. He was preceded in death by his wife Marian Parker Hatcher, parents Louise Riser and Ralph Hatcher, sister and brother in-law Peggy and Ivey Wilson, brother Randal Hatcher, brothers and sisters in-law Ewart and Vera Parker, Dorothy Mae Parker and Alton Forte, Willie Bell Parker and Harris Godwin, James Dugger, Onnie Parker and Thomas Dorminey.
Bob leaves behind his children, their spouses Andy Keysor (Cheryl) Pat Hatcher (Buddy), Jennice Hatcher (Bobby); grandchildren Erin Hatcher, AJ Hatcher, James Hatcher II, Cortney Mai, Brandy Bridwell, Olivia Hatcher, Alex Hatcher; six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Peggy Hatcher and Ruth Dugger; numerous nieces nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. We, his family, ask everyone who knew Bob Hatcher to take a moment to rejoice for his life and the joy he gave others.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, April 4, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. with the funeral services at 2 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2013 at Northside Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Harris officiating. Burial and Military Honors will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. — Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home of Quitman is in charge of Arrangements.
