Harold Dean Hagan, 78, of Lake Park, Ga. died on Friday, March 29, 2013 at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was born on June 13, 1934 in Tallahassee, Fla. to the late Rufford Merrill and Grace Hartsfield Hagan. Mr. Hagan was the owner/operator of Bay Meadow Corporation and was a residential and general contractor for the states of Georgia and Florida. He began his life’s work starting as a bag boy for Winn-Dixie in Tallahasee, Fla. and later ascended to become the assistant store manager. Later, he was promoted to store manager and was transferred to the Valdosta Winn-Dixie on Patterson Street. Mr. Hagan later built and operated the first convenience store in Valdosta, The Time Saver Minit Market, located on Patterson Street. He served on numerous local, state, and national committees. He was a two-time President of the Valdosta-Lowndes Home Builder’s Association, now known as the South Georgia HBA. He was also a former state director and state trustee of the Georgia Home Builder’s Association and was the former National Home Builder’s rural housing committee chair. He was a mentor to many in the housing industry and to many others. His greatest joys were spending time with his family, his business, and working on the family farm. He also enjoyed his horses and motorcycling. Mr. Hagan was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and had been attending Francis Lake Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Betty Jean Simmons-Hagan of Lake Park; a son, Mickey Hagan; a daughter, Judy Hagan; a son, Greg Hagan all of Lake Park; five grandchildren, Jennifer Hagan-Jones and her husband Matthew of Jacksonville, Fla., Eric Hagan, Josh Hagan, Bradley Hagan and David Hagan, all of Lake Park; three great-grandchildren, Soloman Broman, Brooke Broman and Olivia Broman; a brother and sister-in-law, Glyn and Bebe Hagan of Valdosta; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Rufford William Hagan.
Service for Harold Dean Hagan will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 in the chapel of the McLane Lakewood Funeral Home with the Rev. Eldridge Lyons and Dr. Henry Cannington, Jr. officiating. The burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery in Tallahassee, Fla. at 4 p.m. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the McLane Lakewood Funeral Home.
