Mrs. Jean McDonald Dean, 82 of Gainesville, Fla., formerly of Quitman passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. Mrs. Dean was born Jan. 10, 1931 in Valdosta to Donald Bennett McDonald and Marie Storey McDonald. She grew up in Quitman and graduated from Quitman High School in 1948. She attended college at Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga. and graduated with a degree in English from the University of Florida in 1953. Mrs. Dean taught English in Tifton, Ga. at the Tifton High School. She returned to Quitman in 1960 to work at the Quitman Free Press, where she wrote the Brooks County Line for many years. Afterwards she worked at WSFB Radio in Quitman as a disc jockey and worked as a writer/editor in the office of Public Relations at University of Georgia. Mrs. Dean was a member of the Quitman United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years.
Survivors include her two sons, Albert David “Skeet” Dean, III of Stone Mountain, Ga., and William “Bill” McDonald Dean of Gainesville, Fla. Mrs. Dean was preceded in death by her sister, Lala McDonald Lipsey.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 2 p.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Brown officiating.
