Elson Lee “Dink” Stephenson, of Valdosta, 74, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at South Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Feb. 25, 1939, in Tarboro, N.C., to the late Woodrow and Ethel Stephenson. He attended Valdosta High School before entering the National Guard in 1958. He was most recently employed as an estimator for Sloan Construction and retired in 2009.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Audrey June (Brown) Stephenson; two sons, Patrick Stephenson of Valdosta, and Sean Stephenson of Ackworth, Ga.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tommy and Sandra Stephenson of Lake Park, Ga., Freddy and Wanda Stephenson of Hahira. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Dominic and Danica Stephenson of Ackworth, Ga.; several nieces and nephews, and many long-time friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Stephenson.
Dink was a gun enthusiast, bird watcher, hunter and fisherman who had a great love of the outdoors. His greatest accomplishments were centered around his home and his family. His love for his family was boundless. He was also an avid NASCAR fan and wood sculptor. Ever the storyteller, he could twist a yarn unlike any other. For many years, he was a member of the Withlacoochee Hunting Club and he was also a member of the Valdosta Masonic Lodge No. 19.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Willis officiating.
