VALDOSTA — John Vernon Sansberry Sr., 84, of Valdosta died Monday, May 20, 2013, at Langdale Hospice House. He was born in Lowndes County on Dec. 16, 1928, to the late Clarence and Lucille Johnson Sansberry. Mr. Sansberry was a retired truck driver, served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Greenwood Baptist Church. He worked with David Hodges Cars and Trucks for almost 20 years. Mr. Sansberry was a devoted and loving husband, Daddy, Grandaddy and Great- Granddaddy. He was a devoted Christian, loved to fish and was a very generous and hardworking man.

Mr. Sansberry is survived by his wife of almost 64 years, Martha Sasser Sansberry of Valdosta; one daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Ronald Avery of Valdosta; one son, John V. (Johnny) Sansberry Jr. of Lake Park; three grandchildren, U.S. Navy IC1 Ron Avery Jr. (June) of Norfolk, Va., Jennifer Avery of Valdosta and Lisa Okroi (USAF CMSgt Sam) of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; seven great-grandchildren, U.S. Navy HN Ashley Avery of Beaufort, S.C., Lauren Avery of Norfolk, Va., Hannah Black of Easley, S.C., Austin Myers of Tifton, Alesa Bennet of Valdosta, Morgan Okroi and Samantha Okroi of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; one sister and brother-in-law, Emma and Jimmy Moore of Valdosta; several nieces, nephews, cousins and his four-legged baby, Wendy.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Carnell Bryant, Faye Tetrault and Mary Frank Horne; and one brother, Wilbur (Bill) Sansbury.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, May 23, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Pastor Chip Fuller officiating. Burial will follow in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
