Eugene Frederick Wright

VALDOSTA —  Eugene Frederick Wright, 84, of Nashville, Ga., passed into eternal rest on Thursday, May 16, 2013, with his beloved wife of 62 years, Billie Ruth (Nix) Wright, and daughter Susan (Wright) Barney by his side.

Gene was born in Baker County, Ga., on March 16, 1929, and grew up on a farm where his parents were sharecroppers. He attended Elmodel School.

In 1948, Gene met his future bride, Billie Ruth Nix, and they were married August 1950. He worked with the A&P Tea Company until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952 as a private in the supply system and deployed to Korea. He served his country with pride during his 25 years of service, which included wartime deployments to Korea and Vietnam (two tours), and peacetime deployments to Japan, Germany, and the Panama Canal Zone. He was formally recognized for his service to our nation and awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

In 1980, Gene and his wife purchased Levin Pecan Company's business and established Wright Pecan Company, which they owned and operated for ten years.

Gene was a volunteer, officer, and active member of the VFW Post 5978 in Nashville. He loved animals, especially his many canine companions over the years. He enjoyed fresh-water fishing and backyard grilling and was an avid gardener, renown for sharing his bounty with friends, neighbors, and his doctors and their staff.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Earnest Albert and Carrie Pearl (Kirksey) Wright, his sisters Virginia Wright and Ann (Wright) Garrettson, and his brother Lonnie Wright.

He is survived by his loving wife Billie Ruth, their three children, Richard (Jan) of Savannah, Bill (Lynne) of Denver, Colo., and Susan (David) Barney of Lynchburg, Va., their six grandchildren, Travis, Justin, and Virginia Wright, Stephanie (Justin) Schoop and David and Andrew Barney, his brothers Bob (Janet) and Warren (Peggy), nieces and nephews, and his friends and neighbors.

Funeral service will be held Sunday May 19, 2013, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Southerland and the Rev. Stanley Luke officiating. Interment will be in Westview Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family request remembrances in Gene's honor be made to Berrien County Humane Society P.O. Box 1044 Nashville, GA 31639. Lovein Funeral Home, Nashville.
