Missionary Betty Sirmans Williams

VALDOSTA — Missionary Betty Sirmans Williams was born Feb. 13, 1939, in Valdosta, Ga. She was the ninth of 14 children born to the late Dea. Charlie Sirmans and Alberta Leona Corbin Sirmans of Stockton, Ga. Betty is an alumni of Stockton Elementary, Lakeland High School and Pinevale High School, class of 1957. She was a good student and friend, and a founding member of the PAMS Club. She is also a 1963 graduate of the Pinevale School of Cosmetology and completed her certificate in Nursing Assistance in 1985.

Betty accepted Jesus Christ as a young child attending New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, under the pastorate of the late Rev. E.K. Howard. After moving with the family to Valdosta, she joined the Mt. Ararat MBC where she served faithfully for more than 50 years under the pastorates of Rev. Freddie Sirmans, the Rev. Odell McGee, Pastor Al Colbert and Evang. Bessie Colbert, Min. Aaron Winston, Jr., and Rev. Charles Day. Having led a life committed to bringing others to Christ, she was licensed as a Missionary in 2002 by the late Pastor Colbert.

As an employee, Betty was honest, hardworking and loyal. Her career included early employment as a housekeeper for several families, later as a seamstress at Levi Strauss, supervisor A&P Produce, and lastly as a nursing assistant with Eldercare and Southern Homecare-Restcare, Inc. Throughout her life, she was committed to making a difference and willing to volunteer her service wherever there was a need. Betty served as a union representative while employed with Levi Strauss, was active in the A. Philip Randolph labor movement, volunteered with the Valdosta Parks and Recreation program at Lomax-Pinevale, and was proud to be a part of the Senior Volunteers program and Lowndes-Valdosta AARP in her latter  years.

Having fought a good fight and finished her course, Betty passed from this life on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at South Georgia Medical Center, surrounded by devoted family and friends.  She was preceded in death by both parents; two husbands, Joseph Williams of Bellville, Fla. and Bishop John Donaldson of Valdosta; one sister, Millie Coleman; four sisters-in-law, Allie Mae (Sylvester) Williams, Hattie Mae Williams, Gloria Sirmans and Mollie Hall Sirmans; eight brothers-in-law, Alfred James “Scoop” Myers, Sr., Herbert, Eddie, Monroe, Samuel and Jimmy Williams, Sam Donaldson and Marvin Jones; three nephews, Travis Mims, Moses “Pookie”  Madison and Paul Williams; two nieces, Betty Ann Coleman-Guyton and Georgette Williams; two beloved friends, Mrs. Harvey Holder and Mrs.  Vivian Lasane and a host of dearly loved aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws and friends.

Those left behind to continue her story include a daughter and son-in-law, Min. Debra Baker Franklin and Dea. Gregory “Scoo-Moo” Franklin; their children, Gregory Franklin, Jr. of Valdosta, LuCynda “Cyndi” Wilson of Daytona Beach, Fla., Myeisha (Jerotha) Anderson of Valrico, Fla., Vanitta Jones, Thaaron Mathis and Jacqueline “Jackie” Franklin, all of Valdosta; nine great-grandchildren, Khalial, Marshawn, Infiniti, Jasmine, Jerotha III, Jonathan, Shaniyah, Benjamin and Jarod; five brothers, Elder Marvin (Evang. Surdelta) Sirmans of Clyattville, Ga., Buie “Charles” (Sarah) Sirmans and Walter Bernard “Rip” Sirmans of Brooklyn, N.Y., Freddie Lee Sirmans, Sr. of  Valdosta, and Rev. Jimmy (JoAdell) Sirmans of Spokane, Wash.; 10 sisters, Mary Sirmans Myers, Laura “Jean” MIller, Marie Jones and Mary Walker of Valdosta, Joyce (John) Marshall of Ala., Hazel (Rev. Thomas) McDowell of N.C., Onie Roberts of Adel, Henrietta (Charles) Anderson of Atlanta, Ruth Ann Allen, Pearson, Ga. and Cynthia (Maurice) Price of Virginia Beach, Va.; one uncle, William “BoBo” (Kim) Corbin, Atlanta; god sister, Evang. Patricia Ann Collins of Valdosta; devoted first cousins, Larry (Gail) Sirmans, Tifton, Artis Sirmans (Phyllis), Valdosta, Marcus Muchison, Loreno (Annette) Muchison, Dinessa (Jimmy) Walker and Karen (Dennis) Carter, all of Waycross, and Kerry (LaTrise) Muchison, Fairfield, Calif.; one brother-in-law, Archie Lee Postell; seven sisters-in-law, Mable Sirmans of Valdosta, Carolyn Jordan, Lithonia, Ga., Callie Williams, Belville-Jennings, Fla., Lonnie, Mae Lillie and Mersena Williams, all of Valdosta, and Mattie (Tim) Smith, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; her ‘Girls’ whom she loved as dear daughters, Kayte “Beverly” (Tyrone) Thompson, Round Rock, Texas, Medina King, Adel, Deborah (Gene) Livingston and Margaret (Kevin) Cummings of Valdosta, Ebony Davis, Jacksonville, Fla., Evang. Dynel (Victor) Miles, Daytona Beach, Fla.; devoted friends and neighbors, Luke and Francis Johnson, Irie Childs, Bernice (Leroy) Sherman and Roselle Baker; Pastor Charles and Lady Patricia Day and the Mt. Ararat MBC family; the Baker  family, Henry (Rubye) Sr., Venda Sermons, Sarah and Harold (Janet) Wilmatine, Debra’s siblings (Ronald, Edith, Michael, Henry Jr., and Brittany) and loving cousins; Edith and Pete Hope; the Donaldson family; the Wilson family; dear friend, Mildred Simon and the Register and Franklin families; Earnestine Doe and the Coastal Plains Seniors program; her ‘Angels’ at Lake Haven Nursing Home; her dedicated physicians, Dr. Larry Smith, Dr. Joseph Thomas, Dr. Ven Chiang and their staffs; and a host of other grieving family and friends.

Funeral service will be held Sunday, May 5, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at New Jerusalem Baptist Church. The Rev. George W. Blunt, pastor and the Rev. Jimmy Sirmans will officiate. Burial will follow in Pallbearer Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 4, 3013 from 5-6 p.m. at the funeral home. — Scott And Roberts Mortuary
