Larry Joe Grooms, 67, of Valdosta, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013, at South Georgia Medical Center after a long illness.
He was born July 10, 1945, in Valdosta, the son of the late O.D. and Mildred Turner Grooms. A graduate of Valdosta High School, he had been employed as Night Supervisor at the water treatment plant at Moody Air Force Base, receiving a Cold War Veteran Commendation for his vital services. He later began his 26-year career as an Insurance Inspector with LFC Nationwide, retiring in 2011, and for many years he worked part-time for Pinkerton.
Larry was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and he enjoyed studying the different religions from around the world.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Commander Grooms of Valdosta; a son and daughter-in-law, Bradley Clayton and Janice Grooms of Atlanta; three granddaughters, Bonnie Grooms of Valdosta, Jennifer and Elizabeth Grooms of Atlanta; two brother-in-laws, Jerry Commander and wife Angie of Valdosta, Joe Commander and wife Ann of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; nephews and nieces, Sam Commander and wife Lisa of Jackson, Jessica Commander of Valdosta, Mrs. Josh (Amy) Commander, of Hahira, Shantel Perry and husband Drew of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Kyle Commander of Murfreesboro, TN; and several cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Ida Commander; his father-in-law, Roy Commander; and nephew, Josh Commander.
A graveside service for Mr. Grooms will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 3, 2013, in Sunset Hill Cemetery, with Mr. Jerry Carter officiating. Condolences may be conveyed to the family at www.mclanecares.com. — Carson McLane Funeral Home, Valdosta.
