Fred Eugene Bass

-- — Fred Eugene Bass, of Smiths Station, Ala., passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Columbus Medical Center in Columbus, Ga.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. EST(Eastern Standard Time), on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at Philadelphia Baptist Church with the Rev. Skip Speed officiating. Interment will follow the service at Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. EST at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City, Ala.

Mr. Bass was born Sept.17, 1924 in Nashville, Ga. to the late George Manuel Bass and Leila Lee Caldwell Bass. Mr. Bass proudly served in the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Independence during the Pacific Campaign in World War II and retired from the army after serving during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He worked at Wells Dairy and later retired from Tom’s Foods as a national accounts coordinator. He was a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church. He loved playing golf, fishing, University of Alabama football and spending time with his family.

Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Ann Laura Pitts Bass; a son, Jerry Bass; three brothers, Charlie Bass, Jimmy Bass and Tommie Bass; and several half-sisters and brothers.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Bass Simons and husband Steven of Smiths Station; three sons, Fred Eugene “Geno” Bass, Jr. and wife Donna of Gauthier, Miss., Randy Lee Bass and wife Sharon, her sons Tyler and Josh, Gregory Bass and wife Lori, all of Smiths Station; sister, Ruby Bass Alexander; grandchildren, Joleasa Laughlin and husband Michael, and Hunter Matthews, all of Smiths Station, Jarrett Bass and Jennifer Rondy, both of Gauthier, Miss.; great-grandchildren, Jason, Jakob and Dylan Laughlin, Kyle Rondy, Rayleigh Bass , and J.J. Bass; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family; and long-time friends, Randy Wilson and Bob Raker. — Charles Shaw @ Vance Memorial Chapel, Phenix City, Ala.
