-- — Jane Alberti Wood Comer passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 at her home in Madison, Fla. Memorial service will be held, Monday, March 3 at 11 a.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary of the church.

After graduation from Blackshear High School, Jane attended Valdosta State College for a year, returning home where she worked as a feature writer at The Blackshear Times and for two years attended evening classes at Waycross Community College. She then went to Athens, Ga., where she met her husband and graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism.

Jane and Cyril Murray Comer were married on April 5, 1959 at the Blackshear Presbyterian Church.

They lived in Marietta, Ga., a few months. Murray, a pharmacist and Jane wrote for the Marietta Journal. They later moved to Valdosta, Albany, then came to Madison, Fla., where they made their home. They purchased Roberts Drug Store in July 1962, later changing the name to Comer’s Drug Store and they operated it for 21 years.

The Comer family helped found Grace Presbyterian Church PCA, May 20, 1973. Jane served as the first president of the Women in the Church. She taught Sunday School and actively worked in other capacities of the church.

The Comers also took part in the founding of Madison Academy in 1968. Jane was the first secretary on the Board of Directors.

Jane was a member of Madison Historical Society, Treasures of Madison Co., and wrote historical articles published in several Madison Magazines. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Quitman Chapter 112, Quitman, Ga. She held offices in the chapter and wrote several winning essays in the UDC contest. She had several historical stories published in the UDC National Magazine. She did extensive research on her own family history, finishing her story in December, 2012.

Jane took much delight in her children and grandchildren and still played tennis and swam with them until age 72. She found real solace in the families beach vacations.
