Ruby Stone Whitson, 89, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at her home in Monticello, Florida. Mrs. Whitson was born to the late Jesse Burton and Nora Lee Stone in Manatee, Florida, on Oct. 11, 1924. Mrs. Whitson spent time in Merritt Island, Fla., Tulsa, Okla., and Lake Park, Ga., before moving to Monticello in 1981. She was of Methodist faith, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Monticello.
Miss Ruby was very active in her community and church. She was a charter member of Altrusa International, and a members of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Monticello Opera House. She was the Representative from Jefferson County to the Board of the State Department of Elder Affairs. She was very active in the Jefferson Senior Center and was a Board member for many years.
Miss Ruby is survived by three sons, Steve (Susan) Whitson of Monticello, Fla., Mark (Janis) Whitson, Valdosta, Ga., and Lee Whitson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Jody Whitson (Steven) Hardy of Franktown, Colo.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph V. Whitson.
A visitation is set for Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, from 5-7 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home Monticello Chapel. The funeral service is set for Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Monticello. The family will receive friends at the Family Ministry Center following the service.
