Arletha Hester Miller

VALDOSTA — Mrs. Arletha Hester Miller was born on March 21, 1918, in Lowndes County, Georgia, the fifth of seven children to the late Mr. Daniel N. “Sweet” and Mrs. Barbara Hill Hester.  She peacefully transitioned from this earthly life on January 28, 2014, at her home on 4600 Miller Lane, Valdosta, Ga.

At an early age, Arletha affiliated with the Mt. Vienna AME Church.  She worked tirelessly for her family and was employed at Moody Air Force Base.  During that time, she was married to the late Julius C. Carter and to this union four children were born.  Years later, she began working at Nijem’s Dry Cleaners.  She married Mr. Frank L. Miller and to this union, two daughters were born.  Together, they bought Nijem’s Dry Cleaners and changed the name to Miller’s Dry Cleaners, a long-standing business they owned and operated in the Valdosta community.

Arletha was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.  Her caring spirit was shown to everyone she met.  According to her only surviving sister, “Letha had the biggest heart of all.  She was always giving.”

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of more than 65 years, Mr. Frank L. Miller; her daughters, Mrs. Voytelle Miller Gardner and Ms. Claytis C. Knox; her sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Johnson, Mrs. Odessa Horton and Mrs. Ethel Mae Miller; and her brother, Mr. Eddie Lee Hester. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Ms. Cassandra Annette Murray and Ms. Barbara Jean Bailey of Valdosta; her sons, Mr. Earl Carter (Ella) of Macon, GA, and Edward Carter (Shirley) of Valdosta; her sister, Mrs. Vivian B. Hill of Valdosta; a sister-in-law, Ms. Rosa M. McShan of Centerville, IL, and a brother-in-law, Mr. George L. Miller of Jacksonville, FL.  She will be greatly missed by a host of other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 4pm, from the sanctuary of Mt. Vienna AME Church, 4880 Vienna Church Road, Valdosta.  Rev. Roy Brown is pastor and will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery, Valdosta.  Public viewing will be today from 1pm to 8pm.  Sympathy may be expressed by signing the online registry at  Personal and professional services are provided by Godfrey Funeral Home, LLC.
