Sallie Mae Arnold Holmes

VALDOSTA — On Sunday morning, June 29,  2014, Sallie Mae Arnold Holmes was called home to glory with her family by her side. She was  born July 1, 1918 in Madison, Fla., to James and Agnes Arnold. At the age of five, her parents moved to Valdosta, Ga. Although she had a fifth grade education, Sallie excelled at the vocational school where she received her diploma as a nurse aid. After receiving her diploma, she started working at Pine View General in central supply for 30 years. She also worked private duties  for the Bright and Brooks families. In 1935, Sallie met Jessie Holmes and united in marriage in 1937; to the unit eight children were born. In 1945, she joined Pleasant Temple where she served as a loyal and devoted member until her death.

Sallie is preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Holmes; parents, James and Agnes Arnold; one child, Mary Agnes Scott; one brother, James Arnold Jr.; four sisters, Carrie, Dorothy, Bertha, Ella; mother-in-law, Amanda Tyson; three brothers-in-law, AC, RJ, and Joe C; six sisters-in-law, Lucille, Leola, Louise, Maebell, Baby Sister, and Christine; two sons-in-law, John Lee and Sylvester Scott Sr.; one aunt; Honeybabe; two grandchildren, Darrel and Jimmy; one great-grand, Sylvester III; and Gwinnett Williams.

She leaves to cherish her memories one devoted daughter, Inell Matchett; six sons, Ulysses, Deacon Jessie (Dorothy), Deacon Elijah (Johnnie Ruth), John (Patricia), David (Annette), Herbert (Bonnie Faye); five brothers, Charlie (Beatrice), Nathaniel (Ernestine), Ernest (Alice), Donnell, Elijah (Shirley); brother and sister-in-law, Warren and Carrie Bell; one she loved as her daughter, Ruby Lee; 66 grandchildren; 84 great-grandchildren; 45 great-great- grandchildren; devoted granddaughters, Gwen (Seabron Jr.) Williams, Captain Pinky (Eldred) Eady, Muriel (Elbert) Bradley, Erica (Yapal) Jones, Debra (Wesley) Allen, Carol  Holmes; devoted great-grandson, Jeffery Hunter Jr.; devoted niece, Gloria (Ector); caring nieces, Lillie Pearl (Jerry), and Ruby Head; former daughters-in-law, Lett, Phyllis, Marjorie; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A special thanks to Pleasant Temple Baptist Church family, Unitarian Universalist Church of Valdosta, Care Master Medical Services, Heart and  Hands  Bethany Hospice, Evelyn, Kat, Cathy, Kim, Darlene, Wanda, Lee, and Sineath family.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Pleasant Temple Baptist Church. Pastor Bernard Robinson will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. — Final rites are entrusted to  Harrington Funeral Home
